About the veterinarian

Dr. Kelly DeBaene is a small animal veterinarian with over 10 years of experience working in general practice and animal shelter settings in both the United States and the Netherlands. She earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology from the University of Illinois and is board-certified with the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. In addition to Mokum Mobile Vet, Kelly is a freelance veterinarian, public health consultant, and writer. In her free time, she enjoys exploring the world near and far, being outdoors, and spending time with her husband, daughter, and their handsome cat, Murray.

The origin of Mokum Mobile Vet

Mokum Mobile Vet was born out of a desire to provide families and their cats with personalized, gentle veterinary care in the comfort and convenience of their homes. After years of working in busy private and corporate vet clinics, hustling between packed appointments, walk-ins, and phone calls, Kelly was left feeling burned out and frustrated. In the typical clinic environment, she felt it was nearly impossible to provide the care she knew she was capable of. It was very common to see terrified or angry cats in those hectic, loud clinics. And it was equally common to feel there was little time left for quality client education, especially for cases of feline urinary problems that warrant longer discussions.

A few years out of vet school, Kelly eventually found a change of pace and focus in animal shelter and public health work. While training to become the new veterinarian of a cat shelter in California, she joined her predecessor and mentor, Dr. Lumsden, on several house calls for her feline mobile practice. After just a few visits, Kelly quickly saw a light as a veterinarian in house call medicine. Now based in Amsterdam, Kelly has finally set up the feline house call practice she had imagined years ago. But in this version, she arrives by electric bike.

For Kelly, the practice name Mokum Mobile Vet has double meaning. With Amsterdam's nickname Mokum meaning 'safe haven' in Yiddish, Mokum Mobile Vet aims to provide cats and their people the care they need in the comfort of their homes -- their safe havens. And the practice itself has become Kelly's own safe haven in the field of veterinary medicine.
